Your Postpartum Weight-Loss Plan: 4 Ways to Stick To It
The frustration might be setting in: After all, you gave birth five months ago and you still haven't lost all your pregnancy weight. Well, don't give up. Lots of moms take lots of time to lose what they've gained, and patience is the key to shedding those stubborn pounds.
If you haven't done so already, set a realistic goal for yourself — say, losing one pound per week. Work toward it by following a sensible weight-loss diet (the Postpartum Diet has all the nutrients you need; add about 300 calories a day if you're nursing), and by exercising regularly. Regular is the operative word here — working out for at least 30-minutes three times a week is essential to your overall efforts.
Find an activity you enjoy — jogging, yoga, cycling, swimming, even walking works — and plan it into your week. You'll get in shape even faster if you add a little extra activity into your daily routine. For example, leave the car in the garage and take the baby in his stroller for nearby errands. When you do drive, park a bit farther away than usual, and take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever you can. Every step counts toward your ultimate goal of burning more calories than you take in.
Get your partner on board, too. Instead of watching TV, take a walk tonight. And together, make a commitment to rid your fridge and pantry of high-fat foods; then stock up on fruits and veggies, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products and lean meats, poultry, and fish that are good for you (no matter what you weigh).
Most importantly, keep a positive attitude. Focus on what you've accomplished so far (like having a baby and the weight you've already lost). And remember that just because you aren't at your prepregnancy weight yet doesn't mean you can't look fabulous. If your skinny clothes are still too skinny, buy a couple of fun things that you'll enjoy wearing as you make progress toward your goal. A new haircut or makeup can also perk you up as you slim down.

Preparing for First Feedings
- Set up for success. Before your baby actually takes a bite, let her practice sitting in her high chair or feeding seat for a couple of days, adjusting the height of the tray or seat so it fits just right. And don't forget how wiggly your little worm can be — always fasten the safety straps, including the one around the crotch.
- Get your gear. Skip the silver spoon Aunt Martha sent; a small plastic- coated model is much easier on tender gums. Count on having several on hand during feedings (one for you; one for baby) to foster baby's sense of independence and to avoid power struggles (yes, those happen even at this age). For you, choose a long handle for ultimate maneuverability; for baby, a short, curved handle is easier for tiny fingers to grip and will help prevent her poking herself in the eye. Just before you're ready to start, put on a bib (on baby, yours is optional). A word to the wise: Get your baby into the bib habit right from the start or she'll resist it big-time later. It can be made of soft plastic, cotton, or paper — as long as it's big enough to cover her chest and belly, you're good to go.
- Time it right. The "perfect" time to feed your baby is whenever works for both of you. If you're breastfeeding, you might try solids when your milk supply is at its lowest (probably late afternoon or early evening). Babies who wake up bright eyed and ravenous might be happy to try solids for breakfast. Experiment: Offer a "teaser" of formula or breast milk to whet her appetite, then solids; or try an appetizer of solids followed by a main course of milk.
- Monitor her mood. As stressful as first feedings may be for you, they're even harder for your little one. So keep in mind that a baby who's happy and alert is more likely to open wide for Mommy's spoon, and one who's fussy may only want your breast (or her bottle). If your baby is firmly in the fussy camp, be flexible — you might want to skip solids at that meal and try them next time.
- Don't rush. You'll be surprised at how long it takes to get one little spoonful in that little mouth (and ultimately down the hatch)! Give yourself (and your baby) plenty of time for feedings — and have plenty of patience too. Fast food is not part of a baby's vocabulary.
- Count on rejection. The first few (dozen) meals won't really be meals; consider them attempts to introduce your baby to what eating is. Start by gently placing about a quarter teaspoon of food on the tip of her tongue. If she swallows, place the next quarter teaspoon a little farther back. At first, expect almost as much food to come out as goes in; eventually she'll get the hang of spoon feeding — and respond to it with her mouth wide open.
- Know when enough is enough. Realizing when to stop feeding is as important as knowing when to start. A turned head or a closed mouth is a sure sign that baby is done with this meal. Forcing a baby (or anyone) to eat is always a lost cause.

Let's Chat: Four Ways to Talk to Baby
- Songs. Singing helps teach phonemic awareness, the understanding that words are made up of distinct sounds that can be manipulated and combined. Anything from "Mary Had a Little Lamb" to Christmas carols to your favorite pop tune will work. Extra points if you dance too!
- Books. Again, the words themselves aren't as important as the simple fact of saying them aloud for your baby to hear. Children's books — especially nursery rhymes and poems — are wonderful (especially if you make them part of a familiar, daily routine), but you can also read aloud from your cookbook, newspaper, or novel.
- Questions. Enlist your baby's "help" in making all those little decisions you face every day (Peaches or bananas? Yellow socks or blue?). Ask her what she thinks, then wait earnestly for a reply! It's good practice for the toddler years, when you'll want to offer her the chance to have control whenever possible.
- Her own "words." Sure it feels silly, but you can have an entire conversation based on alternating "ba-ba's" and "ga-ga's." Parroting her own sounds back to her will make her feel listened to and interesting (and isn't she!). It also encourages her to try imitating you. Before you know it, she'll reverse the game by repeating your words (so watch your language!).
